On September 29th (Monday) we headed for Luxembourg to play disc golf. Jesse drove (since he paid for the rental car, by day 6 he was ready to try out the Autobahn for himself) and we enjoyed another beautiful day. Our destination was the Parc du Balveux near Esch-sur-Alzette on the Alzette River in between Luxembourg and France. The Parc du Balveux is a lovely spot on an old industrial site (or maybe an old fort?) that has been developed into multiple playgrounds, an arts venue, restaurant, walking path, and disc golf course. It has the nicest (free!!!) public toilet we’ve ever seen.

The disc golf course was really lovely and we had a fun round. I played decently and won (again). It was a truly lovely day for disc golf and the scenery was gorgeous. Afterwards we kipped down to France for lunch and ended up eating at a kebap joint. Mmm, kebap.

Afterwards we drove over to Völklingen to visit the Völklinger Hütte, a Unesco World Heritage Site. An iron foundry dating from the late 19th century that operated up until 1986. It had 6 furnaces, but ultimately shut down because the feeder system couldn’t be expanded to keep up with demand. It is truly a monument of the industrial age…now a rusting landscape only maintained as a museum. Parts of it are slowly being reclaimed by nature. It was worth the trip!

We ended our journeys a little early on Monday to go home and pack and tidy up the AirBnB before our departure early on Tuesday morning. We made it to Frankfurt with little trouble and boarded a plane to fly back to Detroit. The flight was uneventful, and the only issue we had in customs is that Jesse lost his smoked sausages from the Homburg market (I warned him they wouldn’t make it through customs!). Then we drove home – well, we dropped Jesse and Dad off in Goshen, then went to a GCS volleyball game at Clinton Christian School since Jamie and the girls were already there. Finally we arrived home late Tuesday evening from an amazing journey!
