Praying the Psalms: Intro

A few years back I read a book called Praying the Bible by Donald Whitney. Whitney’s central point is that when we pray the words of Scripture we are thinking God’s thoughts after Him and can be confident we are praying according to His will.

Whitney suggests the easiest way to get into praying Scripture is praying through the Psalms. He gives a framework called Psalms of the Day, in which the 150 psalms are divided over 30 days, with 5 each day. So psalms of the day for the first day of each month are 1, 31, 61, 91, and 121. For the second day of each month the psalms are 2, 32, 62, 92, and 122.

For each day you skim the 5 psalms and pick one to pray through, depending on what is on your heart and which psalm grabs your attention.

On months with 31 days, you can choose whichever one you like or spend extra time in Psalm 119. In this way through the course of a year you will likely pray through all 150 psalms at least once.

For our Thursday morning prayer meetings at church this year I’ve been putting out prayer guides for each psalm. I decided recently to collate them here for future reference for myself. So for the month of September I’ll be posting prayer guides for each day of the month, covering all 150 psalms. I hope it’s helpful!
